Educational institutions can register the Microsoft 365 LTI app on a supported LTI 1.3 platform. Corporate teams more often need Entra ID sign-in, a Teams meeting activity, OneDrive or SharePoint resource links, calendar sync, or an approved Microsoft Graph integration. Map the use case and permissions first, validate everything in a test course, then address any retired classic LTI tools. Microsoft 365 LTI is an education-focused integration. It does not replace every enterprise Microsoft 365 connector.

Paradiso LMS offers Microsoft 365 integration options, including Microsoft Entra ID single sign-on, Microsoft Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive and Outlook connectivity. Additional capabilities, such as user synchronization, calendar integration and Teams meeting activities, depend on the supported connectors and configuration of the LMS environment.

For an overview, see the Paradiso Microsoft LMS integration page.

In this guide: what the integration means, choosing a method, Microsoft 365 LTI, an implementation sequence, setup in Paradiso LMS, migrating retired LTI tools, troubleshooting, measuring impact, corporate scenarios, security, FAQ and a rollout checklist.

What Microsoft 365 integration with an LMS means

Microsoft 365 integration connects learning administration with the tools employees and students already use. A course stops being an isolated destination. Training sessions can sit in Teams, reference documents can live in SharePoint or OneDrive, and scheduled classes can appear in Outlook calendars. The LMS stays responsible for course records, enrollments, completions and reports. The Microsoft applications support the work around them.

Older documentation and many search queries still say Office 365. This guide uses Microsoft 365, and keeps the old name only where it identifies a legacy plugin or application

Bring Your Workplace Learning Together

Connect training with Microsoft Teams, calendars, and learning resources. Where the LTI Advantage services are implemented, it can also pass roster information, deep-linked content and grades. It is not a generic Teams connector and it is not single sign-on.

Microsoft 365 LTI brings several Microsoft Education experiences into a compatible LMS through one app: Teams, Teams Meetings, OneDrive, OneNote Class Notebook, Assignments and Reflect. Which of these work depends on your LMS, your tenant and the features supported for that platform. Meeting attendance does not automatically become LMS completion.

Requirements before you deploy

Microsoft’s deployment guidance for LTI 1.3 platforms requires four things: LTI Core, Deep Linking, Names and Roles Provisioning Services (NRPS) and Assignment and Grading Services (AGS). You also need:

An LMS administrator and a Microsoft 365 Global Administrator who can complete registration and consent.

One-to-one identity matching. The email field in the LMS should match the learner’s Microsoft Entra user principal name or primary email.

A single method for creating or syncing Teams for each course, so you do not end up with duplicates.

Reviewed licensing, permission scopes, browser settings and consent policies.

Support for older LTI tools does not prove that an LMS can run Microsoft’s unified app. Some older external tools use a launch URL, consumer key and shared secret. That is LTI 1.1 style registration and is not interchangeable with LTI 1.3.

Microsoft 365 LTI compared with other methods

<section style="width: 100%!important; max-width: 100%!important; Name the owners of tenant settings, LMS administration, security review and course content. Export existing course placements, file links and Teams connections before you change anything.

Step 2: Define data flows and permissions

Decide what moves between systems: identity, course membership, meeting links, documents, calendar events, attendance, grades or metrics. Grant the narrowest consent scope that works. Choose the authoritative source for user records and set a policy for renamed, duplicated and departed accounts.

Step 3: Set up identity matching

Use Microsoft Entra ID with the authentication method your LMS supports. For Microsoft 365 LTI, check LMS email values against Entra identities before turning on anything that depends on rosters. For other connectors, confirm whether users match on username, email or another immutable ID. Test name changes, guest accounts and multi-domain tenants.

Step 4: Configure the right integration

The unified Microsoft 365 LTI app uses LTI 1.3 registration and standards-based launches. A connector-based integration typically uses OpenID Connect, Microsoft Graph permissions, local sync components and file repositories. These are different paths with different settings, so do not follow connector menu paths when registering an LTI tool, or the reverse.

Step 5: Pilot in a Real Course

Create a test course with an instructor, learner and administrator account.

Verify first launch and Microsoft sign-in; check whether pop-ups and cookies allow the app to work.

Test resource links, Teams meetings or Teams creation, assignments, roles and grade return where supported.

Test document sharing permissions and account changes.

Record errors, timestamps and integration logs; fix them before broader rollout.

Step 6: Train Users and Monitor the Connection

Give instructors a one-page reference: how to launch Microsoft tools, how to pick the right Team or file, and where grades and attendance appear. After launch, watch for sign-in failures, enrollment mismatches, broken resource links and incomplete sync jobs.

Microsoft 365 setup in Paradiso LMS

Paradiso LMS supports integration with Microsoft 365 services, including Microsoft Entra ID authentication, Microsoft Teams, Outlook and SharePoint. Depending on the LMS version and installed connectors, the setup may involve application registration, single sign-on, user provisioning, synchronization settings and service permissions. Administrators should confirm the supported configuration in their environment before deployment.

Register the Microsoft Application and Configure Authentication

Start with a controlled Entra app registration. Confirm tenant ownership, requested permissions, administrator consent and the redirect URI your LMS expects. For integrations using OpenID Connect authentication, administrators must register the correct redirect URI in Microsoft Entra ID. The required callback URL depends on the authentication connector and configuration used in Paradiso LMS. Administrators should obtain the redirect URI from the supported integration settings and ensure it matches the value registered in Microsoft Entra ID to avoid authentication errors.

Use the authorization and issuer endpoints that your installed Paradiso plugin and Microsoft’s current identity platform documentation specify. Keep client secrets in secured configuration storage, and never put secrets or tokens in screenshots or support tickets.

For each registration, keep a record of application and tenant identifiers, redirect URIs, approved permissions, the owner, and the results of your test sign-ins.

Some Microsoft 365 authentication integrations provide additional settings for tenant selection and user account matching. The available options depend on the supported connector and LMS configuration. Administrators should review these settings carefully and test user aliases, guest accounts, duplicate usernames and renamed domains before enabling automated account matching.

Sync users without duplicates or lost records

User synchronization settings in Paradiso LMS depend on the Microsoft 365 integration configuration and the organization’s deployment requirements. Before enabling bulk synchronization, administrators should review the available scheduling options, user-matching rules, processing limits and synchronization logs. For large enrollments, test backlog behavior, task frequency and role mapping in staging first.

Before enabling bulk sync:

Pick a reliable matching field (email, username or another stable ID) and test existing users, duplicate names, email changes and external instructors.

Review which Entra attributes fill which LMS profile fields, and when they update.

Decide whether new users can be created automatically and what happens to unmatched accounts.

Pilot with a small group before syncing the whole directory.

Check cron execution, sync logs, failed records and reconciliation reports after each run.

Depending on the supported Microsoft 365 connector and Paradiso LMS configuration, administrators may have options for account matching, user provisioning, profile-field mapping and scheduled synchronization. Where learner-facing Microsoft account linking is available, administrators should confirm how connection permissions, account changes and profile updates are managed. Test what happens to course access when a learner disconnects or relinks, and make sure support staff can fix mismatches without creating duplicate accounts.

One setting deserves special care. Depending on the configured user-provisioning rules, removing an account from the connected directory may result in account suspension, deactivation or deletion in the LMS. Administrators should verify how these actions affect learner records, course completions and certification history. Confirm your retention rules and backups first, and consider suspension or deactivation if records must be kept.

Calendar and SharePoint

Microsoft 365 calendar integration can help organizations coordinate training schedules, learning events and Outlook calendar activities. The supported calendar selection, synchronization direction and event-update options depend on the Microsoft 365 connector configured in Paradiso LMS. Administrators should test time zones, daylight saving changes, recurring sessions, schedule updates and cancellations, and review available synchronization logs before relying on automated calendar updates.

Paradiso LMS offers Microsoft SharePoint integration to help organizations access and share learning resources within their Microsoft 365 environment. Depending on the supported integration method, administrators can connect SharePoint content with LMS learning activities while maintaining appropriate access permissions. Before deployment, confirm the required SharePoint configuration, document ownership, learner access and permissions for viewing, uploading, editing or removing files. For OneDrive resources, define file ownership and learner access clearly rather than relying only on shared links.

Add a Microsoft Teams meeting to a course

To add a Microsoft Teams meeting to an LMS course, first confirm that a supported Teams meeting integration is enabled in Paradiso LMS. Open the course editing interface, select the available meeting activity or integration option, and configure the session details according to the installed connector. Then open the activity as an instructor and as a learner to confirm the join link, time zone and permissions work. Check the organizer’s Microsoft account can host the session.

A Teams link is not evidence that an attendance or certification rule has been met. If you need attendance records, set up and test the reporting route separately.

Paradiso LMS offers Microsoft Teams integration to help organizations make learning resources and collaborative activities accessible within the Teams environment. Depending on the supported integration method, administrators may need to configure the Microsoft Teams application, Microsoft Entra ID authentication and the required application permissions. Confirm the exact setup procedure for the deployed Paradiso LMS version before enabling the integration for learners. This integration approach is separate from registering Microsoft’s LTI 1.3 application.

Migrating Legacy Microsoft LTI Integrations

Microsoft retired the classic Teams Classes and Teams Meetings LTI apps on September 15, 2025. The classic OneDrive, OneNote Class Notebook, Teams Assignments and Reflect LTI apps were retired on September 17, 2026. Links created by those apps can stop launching even though the underlying files, notebooks and meetings still exist in Microsoft 365. If your courses still show broken Microsoft placements, start here.

Does this apply to you? Only if your courses use those classic Microsoft LTI apps. Paradiso administrators who use a different Microsoft 365 connector are not affected by these dates. Check your external tool registrations to see which apps you actually have. Some legacy Office 365 LTI 1.1 links have no direct migration path at all.

What to do for each classic tool

<section style="width: 100%!important; max-width: 100%!important; margin: 18px 0!important; Where supported, enable debugging and examine authentication failures, synchronization errors and service-connection issues. Record the time of the issue, affected user, tenant, course and operation that failed.

If a diagnostic export or support package is available, use it to collect relevant information for troubleshooting. Before sharing any diagnostic file with the support team, remove sensitive information such as access tokens, API keys, credentials and learner data.

Some Microsoft 365 LMS integrations provide maintenance and resynchronization options for resolving course membership and Microsoft 365 group-related issues. Where these capabilities are supported in Paradiso LMS, administrators should first verify group ownership, existing memberships and potential conflicts with other Microsoft 365 groups. Before performing any repair or resynchronization action, test the process with a limited number of courses, maintain an audit record and confirm that LMS enrollments match the intended Microsoft 365 group memberships afterward.

Measuring learning impact with Power BI

Integrating LMS reporting data with Microsoft Excel or Power BI can help organizations evaluate learning activities alongside relevant business performance indicators. This requires an approved data export or reporting connection, as LTI does not automatically function as a business intelligence connector.

For example, a sales manager can compare sales training completions with lead conversion rates, customer interactions or service quality metrics. Similarly, HR teams can review onboarding completion times, while compliance managers can track overdue training across departments.

Useful measures include:

Sales enablement: Course completion rates, assessment results and changes in relevant sales performance indicators.

Employee onboarding: Time taken to complete mandatory training and progress through assigned learning paths.

Compliance training: Overdue courses, certification status and training completion across departments.

Learning engagement: Participation in instructor-led sessions, learning-path completion and recurring learner questions.

These insights can help L&D teams identify skills gaps, prioritize additional training and evaluate whether learning programs are aligned with business objectives.

However, a relationship between training completion and improved performance does not automatically establish causation. Organizations should compare results against appropriate baselines and consider other factors that may influence outcomes.

Practical Corporate Learning Scenarios

Onboarding a new sales employee

An administrator provisions a new employee’s LMS account through the directory connection and assigns product knowledge, compliance and role-specific training courses. The employee receives course links through Microsoft Teams and can access relevant learning materials alongside daily work activities.

A scheduled Teams session introduces the sales workflow, while SharePoint provides product guides, process documents and reference materials for ongoing use. Role-based learning paths can also support personalized onboarding, allowing employees to complete essential training before moving to more advanced topics.

The manager monitors course completions in the LMS and compares onboarding milestones with early performance indicators through approved reporting. This helps identify training gaps, provide timely support and improve the onboarding experience without disrupting regular work.

Social learning and feedback

Microsoft Teams channels can support peer discussions, knowledge sharing and follow-up questions after instructor-led sessions. Employees can exchange practical experiences, clarify course concepts and collaborate with colleagues while continuing their learning.

SharePoint can provide a central location for localized training materials, facilitator notes, reference guides and updated learning resources. Assigning appropriate document permissions and maintaining a single approved version helps employees access accurate information.

Learner feedback collected through discussions, surveys and course activities can also help L&D teams identify unclear instructions, frequently asked questions and areas where additional training may be required. These insights support continuous improvement of learning content and delivery.

AI-assisted follow-ups

AI-assisted workflows can help L&D teams reduce administrative work involved in meetings, training coordination and learner communication.

For example, after a training-planning meeting in Microsoft Teams, an authorized AI assistant can help summarize key discussions, identify action items and organize follow-up responsibilities. A training manager can use these outputs to track course updates, coordinate with instructors and prepare communication for learners.

AI assistance can also support several recurring activities:

Meeting follow-ups: Summarizing decisions, responsibilities and next steps from authorized discussions.

Task coordination: Organizing course-review requests, instructor assignments and training deadlines.

Learner communication: Drafting responses to routine questions about enrollments, schedules and learning resources.

Information retrieval: Locating relevant training information across connected systems where access permissions allow.

Content improvement: Identifying recurring learner questions that may indicate gaps in training materials.

These capabilities depend on the available AI tools, configured integrations and organizational permissions. Human review remains important for validating AI-generated information and ensuring accurate communication.

When Teams integration makes sense

It pays off when employees already work in Teams every day and attend live classes, share knowledge or need learning reminders there. It is a weaker fit for external partners, seasonal staff or people who rarely open Teams. Those learners are often better served by a browser login and a simple meeting link.

Consider mobile access, guest-user policies, compliance obligations and how much collaboration your courses involve. If you are unsure, pilot with one team and measure course launch success, session attendance, learner satisfaction and support tickets.

Security and maintenance

Treat the integration as an ongoing service. Review application permissions, consent scope, guest access, log retention, data residency and learner privacy on a regular schedule. Audit app registrations, rotate secrets and certificates, and keep a test course for every high-risk upgrade so plugin updates do not quietly break identity matching, calendar sync or course links.

If your installation still uses IMAP or NNTP password authentication, plan to replace it with OpenID Connect or OAuth. This is a separate issue from the Microsoft LTI retirements. Confirm affected users have a working alternative before you disable anything.

Rollout checklist

List existing Microsoft integrations and note any retired classic LTI tools.

Confirm your Paradiso release, supported connectors and installed components.

Approve Entra permissions, redirect URIs and identity matching rules at least privilege.

Pilot sign-in and user matching with new, existing and renamed accounts, and make sure account deletion is off or explicitly governed.

Add a Teams meeting to a test course and check instructor, learner, mobile and time zone behavior.

Check SharePoint and OneDrive permissions, including links in copied courses.

Check scheduled user sync, calendar sync, debug logs and error recovery.

Audit classic LTI content, relink resources, verify grade services where supported and retire old placements safely.

Publish an owner, support contact, review date and runbook for future changes.

Conclusion

Microsoft 365 LMS integration works best when every connection has a defined job. Entra ID simplifies access. Teams, calendars and files coordinate the learning around the course. The LMS keeps the record of completion, assessment and compliance. LTI 1.3 adds another option for compatible education tools, provided the required services and account matching are in place.

Start with a small pilot, test as both instructor and learner, protect historical training records and check replacement resources after any migration. A Teams LMS integration may instead use a vendor app, Teams meeting activity, API or other connector.

Can a corporate LMS use Microsoft 365 without LTI?

Yes. Many corporate requirements are met through Microsoft Entra SSO, a Teams app, calendaring, SharePoint/OneDrive integration and notifications. LTI is useful when the specific learning-tool launch and interoperable education workflows are supported.

Does enabling LTI automatically synchronize grades and attendance?

No. LTI grade services, tool capabilities and course settings determine grade return. Attendance and LMS course-completion rules require their own supported workflow and validation.

What should administrators do about retired Microsoft LTI apps?

Inventory existing placements and course links, deploy the replacement application, follow Microsoft’s LMS-specific migration guidance, test critical content and remove legacy placements at an appropriate point. Do not assume every old link converts automatically.

Can Microsoft 365 integration improve compliance training?

It can make notices, resources and collaboration easier to access, but evidence of compliance—assigned courses, completed assessments, dates and audit logs—should continue to be governed by the LMS and the organization’s compliance processes.

How should learning teams measure value?

Track access issues, launch success, administrative time, course completion, learner satisfaction and relevant business outcomes. Establish a baseline and compare consistent periods; do not infer training ROI solely from integrated app usage.

Transform your eLearning experience with an LMS Office 365 Integration.
